Reddit - "REALgorithm"

The Problem

More and more, people believe their way of thinking is the default — and anyone different is wrong. Our society feels increasingly fragmented, split along lines of identity, belief, age, and background. One major factor? Recommendation systems like YouTube’s, which continually serve up content that confirms our existing tastes and opinions. This keeps us in echo chambers and deepens social divides. So how do we expand people’s perspectives?

The Insight

Exposure to different viewpoints through real human experiences helps broaden our thinking.

AI narrows our field of vision. Real people widen it.

The Idea

Reddit becomes the destination for anyone ready to step outside the algorithm. A space where genuine, diverse voices shape conversations — not code.

Execution

We’ll launch a Chrome extension that taps into AI to analyze the types of YouTube videos users are watching. Based on those patterns, it will recommend Reddit threads that offer contrasting or complementary opinions — bringing balance and depth to otherwise one-sided content journeys.

This tool allows users to shift away from algorithm-generated sameness and instead step into authentic discussions. While YouTube comments tend to reflect the same viewpoint as the video, Reddit provides a broader, messier, more human range of responses.

The extension also introduces a “Viewpoint Meter.” Watching a stream of like-minded content lowers your score, while engaging with a mix of perspectives boosts it. Users who maintain a healthy balance — 80% or above for three months — earn a Reddit community badge that shows they’re genuinely open-minded.
